Aesthetic Brass Tool Rests

Attributed to Benham and Froud, London, England c. 1885

The cross and orb impressed on the feet of these tool rests indicate that they were made by the London manufacturer Benham & Froud, Ltd. Christopher Dresser (1834-1904) – who may have designed these pieces – worked sporadically for Benham & Froud from 1871 to 1893. The firm supplied the Art Furnishers’ Alliance with fireplace and other metalwares, and their documentation provides the primary basis for the attributions of Dresser pieces to the manufacturer.
