Ebonized Floral Chest With Mirror

Herter Brothers [signed] (1865-1905), New York c. 1875

This ebonized, inlaid and parcel-gilded dresser is a fine example of Herter Brothers’ Anglo-Japanesque style. With its crisp dark finish, contrasted by stylized inlaid boughs that drape abstractly from its pinstriped borders – as well as its incised and reeded detailing and spindled crest – this chest quite clearly was influenced by the design precedents of E. L. Godwin. Completely original, with its beveled mirror, marble and distinctive cast brass hardware, the handsome piece is signed “Herter Bro’s” and is a highly important example of their intentionally chaste and somber, Asian-inspired furniture of this era.

[An ebonized queen-sized headboard with identical inlay, undoubtedly made by Herter en suite with this chest, is also available. See item #464-I-BR.]
