Ebonized & Floral Inlaid Headboard
Attributed to Herter Brothers [signed] (1865-1905), New York c. 1875
Done in their Anglo-Japanesque style, this ebonized, inlaid and parcel-gilded headboard is well attributed to Herter Brothers. The stylized inlaid floral bough that drapes across its crest matches that on a signed Herter chest (see item #433-I-B), with which this piece was probably made en suite. The headboard’s crisp, ebonized finish, along with its incised, reeded and spindled detailing, clearly show the influence of E. L.Godwin and make this a good example of Herter Brothers’ intentionally chaste, Asian-inspired furnishings of the mid-1870’s.
