Herter Japanesque Marquetry Inlaid Cabinet
Herter Brothers (1865-1905) [signed]
New York c. 1880
Herter Brothers was the most sought-after furniture making design firm in late 19th Century America. Through their appreciation and incorporation of Oriental aesthetics in furnishing designs, the firm was one of the most innovative and influential in lightening the aesthetics of the period and thus, in changing the focus of the aesthetics of the period. Herter is also renowned for its exceptional skill and creativity in the design and execution of marquetry, which was often custom-designed for specific commissions.
This cabinet is distinguished both for its unusual and much sought-after Oriental-inspired form as well as for its bird, butterfly and branch inlay so prized and emblematic of the Aesthetic Age.
