Rosewood Console with Intarsia Penwork Inlay
Intarsia inlay design attributed
to Stephen Webb (1849-1933)
Made and signed by Collinson & Lock (1870-1897)
Made and signed by Collinson & Lock, this exquisitely crafted rosewood cabinet features delicate and quite elaborate intarsia inlay. The inlay and its intricate engraved penwork were undoubtedly done by Stephen Webb, a sculptor who joined Collinson & Lock as chief designer about 1885. Webb is known for the fine quality of his craftsmanship, and this piece is a superb example. The cabinet retains its original finish and all of its beautifully detailed decorative and functional brass hardware, as well as its original key.
