Ebonized Aesthetic Stools (A Pair)

Probably New York c. 1875

Although the central anthemion cartouche on each side of these ebonized stools is a Renaissance Revival motif, the flaring form of their legs, as well as the turned fretwork under their seat rails, is totally Aesthetic. The influence of Englishman E. W. Godwin (18833-1886) is apparent in the shape and profile of the pieces, crisply articulated by their ebonized finish which helps to impart an Asian character to their graceful form. It is impressive that these distinctive stools have survived as a pair with their original finish and parcel gilt detailing.
