PAIR OF DOULTON LAMBETH VASES
Designed by Elizabeth M. Small (active 1879-1884)
Doulton Lambeth 1884
This handsome pair of stoneware vases features Moorish-inspired stippled foliate decoration that complements their exotic Eastern profile. Done in muted blue, brown and green glazes, the gourd-shaped bud vases were created in 1884 by Duolton Lambeth artist Elizabeth M. Small (active 1879-1884), who won a bronze medal that year at the International Health Exhibition. As indicated by their markings, senior assistant Emily Welch (active 1879-c.1923), as well as the junior assistants Emily Moyes and Augusta M. Birnie (active 1882-1887), also worked on the pieces.
Glazed stoneware with raised and stippled foliate decoration. Impressed logo and date along with incised monogram “EMS” and “EW.” One also impressed “m”, the other also inscribed “b”.
